Watching this during COVID, I was aware of John Carpenter’s style of horror, but my naive mind thought that I wouldn’t be fazed by ’80s special effects, as, surely they couldn’t be that visceral. Perhaps it was the fact that I was alone in an empty house on a dark snowy night in winter, or maybe this scene really is that shocking – either way, I was very much not okay with watching his chest cave in to swallow the doctor’s arms. I did finish the film… the next day, alongside the safety of sunlight and a strong Irish coffee.
